Poetry (18)

Hello Escritori,

I recently read the entirety of Maya Angelou’s Celebrations: Rituals of Peace and Prayer in one sitting. This is a beautiful little volume of poetry, each one dedicated to friends in Maya’s life and to mark special occasions including Oprah’s birthday!

It did gift me a bit of peace at that hectic time, each was heartfelt and powerful.

Check it out, she just blew me away with her felt eloquence, power and grace. R.I.P.

Daedalus and Icarus

Life is a series

Of losses

And gains

Moments of

And submission

To chains.

Intellect is arduously

Industriously acquired

Yet not valued

Unless in service

To some other

Greater power.

Daedalus and Icarus

Knew this, eventually:

A cage remains a cage

Even if one of beauty.

Even though incarceration

Inside it

Seems a perk

Of duty.

The only way to gift a song

To a heart that cries

Instead of sings

Is to collate wisps

Of feathers,

Melt wax

And craft wings.

Freedom! Freedom

Is the aim.

For we are fashioned

All the same.

There is one truth

That indelibly remains

Whether they be

Forged in gold…

Or no:

Chains will remain chains.
