Poetry (15)

Hello Escritori,

It’s poetry time! My apple tree has been a blog star before, but in the light of the day in which this photo was taken, they looked incredibly golden, which is what inspired this Greek inflected poem.

The Apples of the Hesperides

Will you not come

And sit at ease

In the Gardens

Of the Hesperides?

Join hands with these

Celestial guardians

Before they ascend –

Being as they are –

Heavenly bodies:

And the handmaidens

Of Aphrodite.

These are the self-same apples

Of golden hue,

That rewarded Hercules’ labours

And seduced Paris

While Troy burned.

It is also the apple

By which Atalanta

Was earned.

Will you not come

And sit at ease

In the Gardens

Of the Hesperides?

To labour in love,

To possess something precious

To chase down a lover

And fall in a heap

To find both are grateful,

And, darling…

To eat!
